Everything you need to know about each area of the island, with direct links to our detailed guides and tours.
Cozumel has three cruise piers on the western (leeward) coast. Puerta Maya is the largest, handling Carnival and other major lines. The International Pier serves Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. Punta Langosta is closest to downtown San Miguel — you can walk into town in 2 minutes. All three piers are within a 10-minute taxi ride of each other.
Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system on Earth. The best snorkel reefs — Palancar Shallows, Columbia, Paradise Reef, and El Cielo — are all on the calm western side of the island. Visibility regularly exceeds 80 feet. Sea turtles, eagle rays, nurse sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species call these reefs home.
The west coast has calm, white-sand beaches with turquoise water — perfect for families. Popular beach clubs like Playa Mia, Mr. Sanchos, and Nachi Cocom are 5 to 15 minutes south of the piers. The wild east coast has rougher surf and dramatic rocky coastline, ideal for photography and solitude. Passion Island (Isla de la Pasion) offers a secluded beach accessible only by boat.
Chankanaab National Park combines snorkeling, dolphin encounters, and botanical gardens in one location. Punta Sur Eco Park at the southern tip features the Celarain Lighthouse, crocodile sanctuary, and sea turtle nesting beach. The ancient Mayan ruins of San Gervasio — once a pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel — sit in the center of the island. El Cedral, the oldest settlement on Cozumel, hosts a colorful annual fair in late April.
Cozumel is 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. The main coastal road loops around most of the island and takes about 1.5 hours to drive without stops. Taxis are plentiful near the piers with fixed-rate fares posted at stands. Golf cart and scooter rentals are popular for self-guided exploring. The downtown San Miguel area is walkable from Punta Langosta. For the east side, you will need transport — the terrain is undeveloped with few facilities.
