If we run late, does the ship leave without us?
It is the right question. It is also the one that gets answered least honestly — usually with a cheerful "we always get you back on time!" that commits to nothing. The honest answer involves how cruise lines actually treat late passengers, what a return guarantee can and cannot promise, and one specific detail about Cozumel that causes more missed ships than traffic, weather, and boat trouble put together.
That detail is the clock.
The Cozumel time trap
Cozumel sits in Quintana Roo, which observes Eastern Standard Time year-round and does not change for daylight saving.
Cruise ships, meanwhile, frequently keep "ship time" — commonly the time zone of the departure port, held constant for the voyage. For much of the year, when the United States is on daylight saving and Cozumel is not, ship time and local Cozumel time are not the same.
The direction of the error is the dangerous part. Local time in Cozumel reads earlier than ship time. A passenger who checks their phone — which has helpfully updated to local network time on arrival — sees a clock showing an hour they still have, when in fact the ship's all-aboard has already passed.

Do not use your phone's automatic time. Set a watch or a second clock to ship time before you disembark, and treat that as the only clock that exists.
Your all-aboard time is printed on your ship's daily programme and is stated in ship time. That is the number. Nothing else on the island is running on it — not restaurant staff, not taxi drivers, not the clock on the pier.

What all-aboard actually means
All-aboard is not departure time. It is typically 30 to 60 minutes before the ship sails, and it is the deadline for being back on board — not at the pier, not in the queue, not walking through the terminal shops.
Sailing time is when the lines come off. All-aboard is when the gangway is expected to be clear so the crew can complete their count and paperwork.
Passengers who plan to arrive "by all-aboard" have already removed their entire margin. The working assumption should be back at the pier 45 minutes before all-aboard, which is genuinely 45 minutes of slack rather than a comfortable feeling about it.
The part cruise lines do not advertise
Here is the distinction that drives the whole decision:
If you booked through the cruise line, the ship's obligation to you is different than if you booked independently. Cruise lines will generally hold for, or make arrangements for, passengers on their own sponsored excursions when those excursions run late, because the delay is their operational responsibility.
For an independently booked tour, that obligation does not exist. In practice the ship sails.
This is exactly what onboard sales presentations are pointing at, and they are not being dishonest about it. What the presentation leaves out is the rest of the picture — which is that ship-sponsored tours in Cozumel are typically larger, run on fixed timetables built for coach groups, and are priced accordingly. The trade is real in both directions.
The useful conclusion is not "never book independently." It is that when you book independently, the margin becomes your operator's job, and you should verify that they treat it as a job.
What a real return guarantee looks like
Most operators say they guarantee return before all-aboard. The phrase is close to meaningless on its own. What separates a genuine commitment from marketing copy is specificity.
A serious operator can tell you:
The exact return time, in ship time, before you book. Not "early afternoon." A time. If they cannot state it against your ship's schedule, they are not tracking your ship's schedule.
Which pier you will be returned to. Cozumel has three, and they are not adjacent. Being dropped at the wrong one is a taxi ride and a meaningful chunk of your margin.
What the built-in buffer is. Ask how much slack sits between scheduled return and all-aboard. An operator who has thought about it will quote you a figure.
What happens when something goes wrong mid-tour. Boat trouble, weather, a medical issue in the group. Is there a second vehicle? A relationship with another operator? A defined abort point where the tour turns around regardless of what has been seen?
Whether they track the ship rather than the itinerary. Port times change. Weather delays arrivals, and departures get moved up. An operator monitoring actual ship movements will know before you do.

Building a port day that has margin in it
Most late returns are not caused by dramatic failures. They are caused by stacking.
Book one anchor activity, not three. The classic error is a snorkel trip, then a beach club, then shopping downtown, with taxis between each. Every handoff is a place where twenty minutes disappears.
Put the far activity first. If you are going to the east side, San Gervasio, or out to a reef, do it early. Late-day distance is where margin dies.
Treat downtown as the buffer, not the plan. Punta Langosta is walkable from downtown. If you finish early, shopping and lunch absorb spare time at zero risk. If you schedule shopping last and far away, it becomes the thing that makes you late.
Know your tender situation. Cozumel is a docked port for most ships, which is a significant advantage. But if your ship is tendering for any reason, add substantial time — tenders queue, and the last ones fill.
Watch the first-day-of-cruise effect. Passengers are least oriented on their first port day and most likely to misjudge the clock. That is also the day the time-zone confusion bites hardest.
The three piers, and why it matters which one you get
Cozumel is not a single-pier port, and this catches out more passengers than it should.
Punta Langosta sits downtown, walking distance from San Miguel's shops and restaurants. If you are docked here, your buffer is enormous — you can be back aboard in minutes from almost anywhere in town.
International Pier (TMM) and Puerta Maya are south of downtown, close to each other but a taxi ride from the centre. Puerta Maya is the Carnival-affiliated terminal; International handles a rotating mix of lines.
Two practical consequences follow.
First, a tour that returns you to the wrong pier costs you time you did not budget. Taxis between the southern piers and downtown are readily available and inexpensive, but on a busy day with six ships in port the queue is not instant. Confirm the drop-off point, not just the drop-off time.
Second, taxi demand spikes predictably. In the ninety minutes before a mass all-aboard, every passenger who wandered into town wants a taxi at once. If your plan depends on getting a taxi at 3:45pm on a six-ship day, your plan has a weak point in it.
Pier assignments are also not fixed for all time — they can shift, occasionally close to the date. Your ship's daily programme is the authority on where you are actually docked.
If it actually happens
Missing a ship is recoverable. Panicking about it is what turns it expensive.
Go straight to the port agent. Every cruise ship posts a local port agent's contact details in the daily programme — this is precisely what that number is for. Take a photograph of it before you leave the ship. The agent coordinates with the vessel and advises on reaching the next port.
Your passport matters here. This is the practical case for carrying your actual passport rather than only a ship card and a copy. Passengers on closed-loop sailings often travel without one; if you are left behind in Mexico and need to fly to the next port, the document situation becomes the difference between an inconvenience and a serious problem.
Carry a real card and some cash. You may need to book flights, a hotel, or ground transport at short notice.
Your bags stay on the ship. Including, frequently, medication. Anyone dependent on a daily prescription should carry that day's dose ashore. This is sensible regardless and costs nothing.
Contact your operator. A reputable local company will help — that is a large part of what local presence is actually worth on a day like this.
The honest summary
The risk of missing your ship on a Cozumel excursion is low, and it is lower still with an operator that schedules against your ship rather than a generic clock. But it is not zero, and it is not eliminated by a sentence on a booking page.
Three things carry most of the protection:
Set a watch to ship time and ignore every other clock on the island.
Get your return time stated as a specific number, in ship time, against your ship — before you book.
Build one activity with genuine slack rather than three with none.
Do those, and the question that started this article stops being a source of anxiety on the morning of your port day.
