What Is Punta Sur?

Punta Sur Ecological Park (Faro Celarain Eco Park) occupies the entire southern tip of Cozumel island. It is the largest protected area on the island, spanning 247 acres of coastal mangroves, lagoons, dunes, and beach. Unlike the developed resort strip along Cozumel's western coast, Punta Sur remains genuinely wild, with no permanent buildings other than the historic lighthouse and a small visitor center.

The park is best known for three things: the Celarain lighthouse and its panoramic views, the Laguna de Colombia crocodile habitat, and the long stretch of shallow, kid-friendly beach on the Caribbean side. It also contains a small Mayan ruin whose original purpose remains debated by archaeologists, adding a touch of mystery to a place that already feels set apart from the rest of the island.

For cruise passengers, Punta Sur offers something different from the typical snorkeling or beach club day. It is a nature reserve where the focus is wildlife, scenery, and the feeling of being somewhere that has not been manicured for tourism. If you want a Cozumel experience that goes beyond the pier area, this is one of the best options on the island.

Park Highlights

Celarain Lighthouse

Built in 1901, the lighthouse stands at the island's southernmost point. Climb to the top for panoramic views stretching seven miles in every direction. The nautical museum inside houses navigation instruments, ship models, and maritime history of the region.

Laguna de Colombia

A three-lagoon system that is home to Cozumel's resident crocodile population. Observation platforms along the boardwalk let you spot American crocodiles, island raccoons (a Cozumel-only species), flamingos, and dozens of waterbird species without disturbing the animals.

Mayan Ruin

A small but intriguing structure near the coast whose purpose archaeologists have not definitively determined. Some theories suggest it was a navigation aid for ancient Maya canoe traders; others believe it served a ceremonial function related to the winds.

Beach and Snorkeling

The Caribbean-facing beach at Punta Sur features shallow water extending half a mile from shore, making it one of the safest swimming beaches on the island. Hammocks and palapas are available. Shore snorkeling is possible for experienced swimmers willing to make the longer swim to the reef edge.

Wildlife

Beyond crocodiles, the park is home to Cozumel island raccoons (a species found nowhere else on earth), flamingos, frigate birds, herons, iguanas, and seasonal nesting sea turtles. Birdwatchers will find Punta Sur one of the best spots on the island.

How to Visit from Your Cruise Ship

Punta Sur is located about 17 miles south of the cruise piers. The most practical way to visit is as part of a Jeep or dune buggy tour that includes the park as a stop along a route that also covers the east coast, the Jade Cavern cenote, or a tequila tasting. A taxi from the pier would cost around $40 each way, making a guided tour far more economical.

The park charges a separate entrance fee (around $15 per person) which is typically included in organized tour prices. Plan to spend 60 to 90 minutes in the park, enough time to climb the lighthouse, walk the lagoon boardwalk, and swim at the beach. If your cruise port window is tight, discuss timing with your tour operator to make sure you have enough buffer.
