Why Fish in Cozumel?

Cozumel sits at a geographic crossroads that makes it one of the most productive fishing destinations in the western Caribbean. The island is surrounded by the Yucatan Channel, a deep, fast-moving current that funnels warm, nutrient-rich water through the area year-round. That current draws baitfish, and the baitfish draw everything else.

Within 12 miles of the cruise pier you can be in water deep enough for billfish and tuna. The reef system close to shore holds barracuda and smaller sport fish for those who prefer lighter tackle action. The combination of diverse fishing grounds within short range of the dock is rare even by Caribbean standards.

Cozumel is also an ideal fishing destination for cruise passengers specifically because the action starts quickly. You don't spend half the day motoring to the grounds. The fish are close, and our captains know exactly where to find them based on the current conditions.

Species Guide

🐟

Sailfish

Peak: November – April
60–120 lbsDeep water (200–600 ft)

Sailfish are the crown jewel of Cozumel fishing. These acrobatic billfish are renowned for their spectacular jumps and high-speed runs. The deep blue water off Cozumel's western shore holds large populations during winter months, and it's not uncommon to release multiple fish in a single morning.

🐠

Mahi-Mahi (Dorado)

Peak: April – September
10–50 lbsOpen water near debris lines

Mahi-mahi are arguably the most exciting sport fish to catch. Brilliant green and gold, they jump repeatedly and put on an aerial display that never gets old. They school around floating debris and weed lines, and during peak season you can often catch your limit quickly before heading back.

🐡

Wahoo

Peak: October – January
20–80 lbsMid-water trolling

Wahoo are the fastest fish in the sea and one of the most prized catches in the Caribbean. They hit hard, run fast, and provide an explosive fight from the moment they strike. The fall months bring wahoo close to Cozumel in numbers, making them a frequent bonus catch on any November or December charter.

🦈

Blue & White Marlin

Peak: May – August
100–400+ lbsDeep offshore trolling

Marlin fishing is bucket-list territory. These giants fight for hours and are almost exclusively catch-and-release. The summer months bring marlin into the waters around Cozumel and the broader Yucatan Channel, and a full-day charter gives you the best shot at encountering one.

🐟

Barracuda

Peak: Year-round
5–30 lbsReef edges and ledges

Barracuda are a reliable catch year-round and a great option for beginners who want fast, exciting action. They inhabit the reef edges just offshore, and a short trip from the pier can put you on fish within minutes. Great fighters for their size, with impressive speed and sharp teeth.

🐠

Yellowfin Tuna

Peak: May – October
20–150 lbsDeep blue water

Yellowfin tuna are exceptional table fare and a prized target for serious anglers. Schools move through Cozumel's deeper waters during warm months, and locating them often requires covering ground with a fast trolling spread. The fight from a large yellowfin is a full-body workout that rewards experienced fishermen.

Half-Day vs Full-Day Charter

Half-Day (4 hours)

Perfect for cruise passengers with limited port time. You'll be on the water for approximately 4 hours, which is enough time to fish the reef and the edge of the deep-water drop. Best for barracuda, mahi-mahi, and wahoo when in season. Most guests who haven't fished before choose this option.

  • Ideal for cruise port day
  • Great for beginners
  • Reef + near-offshore fishing
  • Back in port with time to spare

Full-Day (8 hours)

Best for Billfish

Full-day charters are the gold standard for serious anglers. Eight hours on the water lets you run to deeper offshore grounds where sailfish and marlin roam. Best suited for experienced anglers or those whose primary goal is billfish. Works best when your ship is in port for a full day.

  • Access to true offshore grounds
  • Best shot at billfish and marlin
  • Larger tuna possible
  • Multiple fishing zones covered
