Puerto Maya Cruise Port: What Every Passenger Needs to Know Before Docking
If your itinerary says Cozumel, there is a good chance you are docking at Puerta Maya — the terminal most people search for as "Puerto Maya cruise port." It is Carnival Corporation's home pier on the island, and on a busy day it handles thousands of passengers stepping ashore within the same hour.
Knowing what is actually there — and what is not — is the difference between a smooth port day and forty minutes of confused wandering through a shopping arcade. This guide covers the terminal itself, the geography around it, transportation, costs, and how to build a day that works.

First: The Name
You will see both "Puerta Maya" and "Puerto Maya" in circulation, and it causes real confusion when people are searching for information or giving directions to a taxi driver.
The official name is Puerta Maya — Spanish for "Mayan Gate." "Puerto Maya" (Mayan Port) is a widespread misspelling that has become common enough that most locals and drivers understand it immediately. Either will get you where you are going. Just be aware that if search results seem inconsistent, this is why.
Cozumel's Three Cruise Terminals
Cozumel is one of the busiest cruise destinations in the Caribbean, and it has three separate piers. Which one you dock at meaningfully changes your day.
Puerta Maya sits roughly 3 kilometers (about 2 miles) south of downtown San Miguel. It is the Carnival Corporation terminal, hosting Carnival Cruise Line ships along with Princess and Holland America vessels. It has two berths.
The International Pier — also called Punta Langosta's larger neighbor or the TMM pier — is immediately adjacent to Puerta Maya, close enough that you can walk between the two in a few minutes. The practical consequence: Puerta Maya passengers are not walking distance from downtown. Two miles in Caribbean heat along a road without continuous sidewalk is not a pleasant stroll. Budget for transportation.

What Is Actually at the Terminal
Puerta Maya was purpose-built as a destination in its own right, and it is more developed than most cruise piers.
Shopping is extensive — a large open-air complex with jewelry stores, tequila and vanilla shops, souvenir vendors, pharmacies, and international brand outlets including Diamonds International and Del Sol. Prices at pier shops run higher than in town, though the convenience is real if you are on a short call.
Food and drink includes several restaurants and bars within the complex, including a Fat Tuesday and various Mexican-themed spots. Expect cruise-port pricing rather than local pricing.
A pool and beach area is available at the terminal, which is genuinely useful if you want water access without leaving the pier. It is not a substitute for a real Cozumel beach — the swimming is limited and it gets crowded — but it works for a short call or for passengers who do not want to organize transportation.
Free WiFi is generally available in the terminal area, though bandwidth degrades sharply when multiple ships are in.
Restrooms, ATMs, and pharmacies are all on site. ATMs dispense pesos and dollars; note that pier ATMs typically carry higher fees than banks in town.
Taxi rank is at the terminal exit and is well organized, though queues build immediately after ships dock.
What is not there: authentic local pricing, quiet, or the actual character of the island. Everything at the terminal is built for cruise passengers. The Cozumel worth seeing starts once you leave.
Getting Around from Puerta Maya
Taxi is the default. Cozumel taxis operate on fixed zone rates rather than meters, and rates are posted — ask to see the rate card if a quoted price seems off. Approximate ranges as of recent seasons:
- Downtown San Miguel: a short, inexpensive ride, typically under $10 USD for the vehicle
- Chankanaab Park: similar range, just south
- Mr. Sancho's / Nachi Cocom beach clubs: modestly more
- Punta Sur Eco Park: substantially more, at the island's southern tip
- East coast beaches: the highest fares, crossing the island
Rates are per vehicle, not per person, up to four passengers — so groups do much better than solo travelers. Confirm the fare before the doors close.
Rented Jeep, scooter, or car gives you the island. Cozumel is small enough to circumnavigate in a few hours, and the east coast — undeveloped, rough surf, a string of open-air beach bars — is the part of the island most cruise passengers never see. Rental agencies operate near the terminal and in town. You will need a driver's license and a credit card, and you should photograph any existing damage before driving off.
Organized excursion is the lowest-friction option. Transportation is included, and the operator is tracking your ship's departure. This matters more than people expect: an independent traveler who misjudges timing on the east coast is genuinely at risk of missing the ship. Ferry to Playa del Carmen departs from downtown, not Puerta Maya. It is a 45-minute crossing each way and only makes sense for a full mainland day. Check the Cozumel ferry schedule before committing — the round trip consumes most of a port call.
Walking to town is technically possible and generally not recommended. It is roughly 30 to 40 minutes each way in heat, along a road with intermittent pedestrian infrastructure.
Carnival Passengers: Specific Notes
Since Puerta Maya is the Carnival home pier, most passengers docking here are on Carnival ships. A few things worth knowing:
Carnival's own shore excursions depart from a designated meeting area within the terminal complex, usually well signed. Independent operators typically meet passengers just outside the terminal gates — there is a designated area, and reputable operators will send exact meeting instructions in advance.
Booking independently is generally less expensive than booking through the cruise line, sometimes substantially. The tradeoff is that the cruise line guarantees it will wait for or accommodate passengers on its own excursions. Independent operators do not carry that guarantee formally, which is why you should only book with companies that build in real return buffer and have a track record. On days when two Carnival ships are berthed simultaneously, expect the terminal, taxi queue, and nearby beach clubs to be significantly busier. Getting off the ship early is worth real money on those days.
Timing Your Port Day
Typical Cozumel port calls run 7 to 9 hours, with common windows being roughly 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM or 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure, and that is a hard deadline.
A workable framework:
First 30 minutes — disembark, clear the pier. If you have an excursion, find your meeting point. If you are independent, get in the taxi queue before it builds.
Hours 1 through 4 — your main activity. This is when you should be doing the thing you came for: snorkeling, a beach club, the ruins, a jeep loop.
Hours 4 through 6 — lunch, a second lighter activity, or shopping in town where prices beat the pier.
Final 90 minutes — return to the pier area. Build genuine margin here. Traffic in San Miguel is unpredictable when multiple ships are in port, and the taxi queue at beach clubs at 3:00 PM is not short.

Money, Documents, and Practical Details
Currency. Mexican pesos get you better value than US dollars nearly everywhere, though dollars are accepted throughout the tourist zone at unfavorable informal exchange rates. Card acceptance is good at established businesses and unreliable with small vendors, taxis, and beach clubs. Carry some cash.
Documents. Cruise passengers on closed-loop itineraries from US ports generally do not need a passport for a Cozumel stop, though carrying one is strongly advisable. Sun and water. Cozumel sun is stronger than most visitors expect. Reef-safe sunscreen is required at the marine park and eco parks, and enforced. Bottled water is the norm.
Tipping. Customary and appreciated — guides, drivers, and servers. Small bills in either currency work.
Time zone. Cozumel observes Eastern Standard Time year-round and does not change for daylight saving. Ships typically run on their own time and will announce it. When in doubt, use ship time for everything.

Making the Most of a Puerta Maya Day
The terminal is comfortable and there is a real temptation to simply stay there — shop, drink, use the pool, board back. Plenty of passengers do exactly that, and if you have a very short call it is a defensible choice.
But Cozumel's reason for existing as a destination is offshore. The reef system here is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world, and the snorkeling and diving are genuinely world-class rather than marketing-brochure world-class. Add the east coast's undeveloped beaches, the island's Mayan archaeology, and a downtown that still has a real Mexican town underneath the jewelry stores, and there is far more here than the pier suggests.
