It's also why chop transmits sharply into the cabin — a fast hull crossing a short, steep sea produces a quick, slapping motion rather than a slow roll. What actually makes a rough day
Wind is the main variable. The channel state tracks wind far more closely than anything else. On a light-wind morning the crossing is often flat enough to be forgettable. In sustained wind, particularly when it's blowing across the channel, it can get uncomfortable quickly.
"Nortes" season matters. Roughly from late autumn through early spring, cold fronts pushing down from the north bring stronger winds to the Yucatán coast. These are the days that generate the worst crossing stories — and, on the strongest ones, port closures.
Afternoons tend to be windier than mornings. Coastal wind commonly builds through the day. As a general planning rule, an early sailing is more likely to be calm than a mid-afternoon one, and this is the single easiest adjustment most travelers can make.
Storm systems well offshore still reach you. Swell propagates. A system nowhere near the Yucatán can still put larger waves in the channel under an otherwise clear sky. A blue-sky day is not automatically a calm-sea day.
Weather closures: how they work and what to do
When conditions exceed safe limits, the port authority — not the ferry company — can close the port and suspend sailings. This is a maritime safety decision, and it applies to everyone.
Closures are relatively uncommon and heavily concentrated in the windier months, but they do happen. The practical implications:
Sailings can be cancelled at short notice. Check conditions the morning of travel rather than relying on a schedule you looked at three days earlier.

Best: outside on the open upper deck, toward the middle, facing forward. Fresh air plus a visible horizon is the most effective anti-nausea combination available, and it requires no medication. The trade-offs are sun, wind, and spray — on a genuinely rough day the forward part of the open deck gets wet.
Second best: lower deck, midships, by a window. A boat pivots around its centre, so the middle moves least. The bow slams hardest and the stern is where engine noise and fumes concentrate. Midships with a horizon view through a window is the best of the enclosed options.
Worst: enclosed, at the very front or very back, no view outside, looking down at a phone. This is the combination that produces the stories. Motion sickness is fundamentally a mismatch between what your inner ear senses and what your eyes see — an enclosed cabin at the extremity of the boat maximizes both the motion and the mismatch.

Preventing seasickness: what works and when to take it
The most common mistake is treating seasickness reactively. Almost every effective option needs to be in your system before you board.
Over-the-counter antihistamines such as meclizine or dimenhydrinate are the standard approach and are widely available. They generally need to be taken well ahead of departure — typically around an hour — to be working when it matters. Drowsiness is a common side effect, which is worth considering if you're driving afterward or booked onto an activity.
Scopolamine patches are prescription in many countries, applied hours before travel, and effective over long durations. Discuss with a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Ginger — capsules, chews, or ginger ale — is a mild option that some travelers find genuinely helpful and has minimal downside.
Acupressure wristbands have mixed evidence, but no meaningful risk. If they work for you, they work.
Behavioural measures cost nothing and help everyone: eat something light rather than travelling on an empty stomach, skip alcohol beforehand, stay hydrated, keep your eyes on the horizon, and put the phone away. Reading and scrolling on a moving boat is the reliable way to make yourself unwell.
If you do start feeling bad: get outside, get air, look at the horizon or the island ahead, and don't fight it. Crew carry bags and hand them out without ceremony — nobody on this route considers it unusual. And remember the crossing is short. Even a genuinely rough one is over in well under an hour.
