There are three ways to reach Cozumel, and most guides only explain one of them. This is the decision guide: flying direct into CZM versus flying into Cancún and taking the ferry versus arriving by cruise ship, with the real trade-offs in cost, time, and what happens when something goes wrong.

Cozumel is an island, which means there is no version of getting there that involves simply driving up to it. You will cross water — in a plane, on a ferry, or aboard a cruise ship — and which of those you choose shapes your cost, your travel day, and how much can go wrong.
Most guides to reaching Cozumel start from the assumption that you have already chosen the ferry, and then explain the ferry. That is useful once you have decided. This article is the step before: the decision itself.

The three ways to arrive
Option 1 — Fly directly to Cozumel (CZM). Cozumel has its own international airport, a few minutes from downtown San Miguel. You land on the island. Done.
Option 2 — Fly to Cancún (CUN), travel to Playa del Carmen, take the ferry. The most commonly used route, and the one with the most moving parts.
Option 3 — Arrive by cruise ship. You did not choose a route so much as a sailing, and your constraint is not how to get there but how many hours you have once you do.

The case for it: it is dramatically simpler. One flight, one arrival, a short transfer to your accommodation. No bus, no ferry terminal, no watching a schedule, no luggage handling between three modes of transport. If you are travelling with children, with heavy dive gear, with mobility limitations, or with anyone for whom a four-hour multi-leg transfer is genuinely difficult, this advantage is not a small one.
It is also resilient. Fewer connections mean fewer opportunities for a delay in one leg to destroy the rest of the day.
The case against it: Cozumel's airport is far smaller than Cancún's, and it is served by correspondingly fewer routes. Direct service exists but is limited and seasonal from many origins, which in practice means two things — you may need a connection anyway, and fares tend to run higher than the equivalent flight into Cancún.
The trap: a connection through Cancún to Cozumel is often the worst of both worlds. You pay the higher CZM fare and still absorb a connection, sometimes with a long layover. Before booking that itinerary, price it against flying into Cancún and going overland to the ferry. The comparison is frequently surprising.

Option 2: Cancún, then the ferry
This is the workhorse route, and the reason it dominates is straightforward: Cancún International is one of the busiest airports in Latin America, with far more routes and considerably more fare competition.
The sequence:
Land at Cancún (CUN).
Travel south to Playa del Carmen — roughly an hour by road in good conditions, by bus, shuttle, taxi, or rental car.
Board the passenger ferry at Playa del Carmen for the crossing to Cozumel.
Arrive downtown San Miguel, walking distance from much of central Cozumel.
The case for it: cheaper flights, far more schedule flexibility, and more ways to recover when a flight is delayed — because more flights exist. The ferry crossing itself is short, and for a lot of travellers the ride is genuinely pleasant rather than something to endure.
The case against it: it is three transfers stacked in sequence, and each one has its own failure mode. A delayed flight compresses your road transfer; heavy traffic on the highway compresses your ferry window; and the ferry does not run around the clock.
The single most important constraint: the ferry stops for the night. This is the thing that ruins arrival days. A traveller lands at Cancún in the evening, moves at a reasonable pace, reaches Playa del Carmen — and discovers the last departure has gone. The result is an unplanned hotel night on the mainland.
Work backwards from the last sailing rather than forwards from your landing time, and build a buffer that assumes at least one leg runs late. Rental car note: the passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen is for people, not cars. Vehicles cross on a separate service from a different terminal on a different schedule. For a short island trip, the ordinary answer is to leave the car on the mainland — or not rent one until you arrive.
Option 3: Arriving by cruise ship
If you are arriving on a cruise, the transport question is settled and a different one takes its place: you are on a clock, and it is not negotiable.

Choose the direct flight if your trip is short, your party is large or includes children, you are carrying dive equipment, anyone has mobility considerations, or the fare difference is smaller than the value of arriving four hours earlier and intact.
Choose Cancún and the ferry if the fare gap is meaningful, you are staying long enough that one long arrival day is a rounding error, or your preferred flight times simply do not exist into Cozumel. The overwhelming majority of independent travellers take this route, and it works well — provided you respect the last ferry.

Two things that apply regardless of route
Time of year changes the calculation. High season brings more direct flights into Cozumel and higher fares across the board; shoulder and low season narrow the route map but soften the prices. Common questions about getting to Cozumel
Can you drive to Cozumel?
Not directly — it is an island roughly 12 miles off the mainland. The passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen carries people, not vehicles; cars cross on a separate vehicle service running from a different terminal on its own limited schedule. For most short trips, leaving the car on the mainland is simpler and cheaper than bringing it.
How long does the ferry crossing take?

Is it cheaper to fly into Cancún or Cozumel?
Cancún is almost always cheaper on airfare, because it has vastly more routes and more competition. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on what you spend getting from Cancún to the ferry, and whether you value the extra half-day the direct flight gives you back.
What happens if I miss the last ferry?
You stay on the mainland overnight and cross in the morning. Playa del Carmen has plenty of accommodation, so it is an inconvenience and an unplanned expense rather than a crisis — but it is entirely avoidable by working backwards from the last sailing when you book your flights.
Can I visit Cozumel as a day trip from Cancún?
Yes, and people do it — but understand the shape of the day. You are looking at a road transfer each way plus two ferry crossings around whatever time you actually spend on the island. It works best as an early start, and it is far more relaxed if you build in a generous return buffer.
Do I need a passport?
Documentation requirements depend on your nationality and how you arrive, and cruise passengers on certain itineraries fall under different rules than air travellers. Which is better for a first visit?
If it is your first time and the budget allows it, the direct flight removes the most variables from the day you are least prepared for them. If the fare gap is large, the ferry route is well-trodden, well-signposted, and used by thousands of travellers every week.

If money is no object and simplicity is, fly straight into Cozumel. If you want the widest choice of flights at the best price and can tolerate a long arrival day, fly into Cancún and take the ferry across from Playa del Carmen — just work backwards from the last sailing.
